If you’re a fan of television’s favourite power family, you’ll no doubt be keeping up with the Kardashians

Whether you do or you don’t, they’re hard to avoid, which is why when they lend their voice to something as emotive as fertility, it has a powerful effect.

Kim Kardashian has recently spoken out about her complicated pregnancy with her first child, daughter North, during which she suffered preeclampsia (also called toxaemia).

Kim says “When I was pregnant with my daughter North, I had a condition called preeclampsia which is basically when the mom’s organs start to shut down. The only way to get rid of that is to deliver the baby. At 34 and a half weeks, I had to go into emergency labour — they induced me. North was 4 pounds. She was almost six weeks early.”

As any woman who has experienced preeclampsia knows, it’s a frightening time. Kim has chosen to speak out about her experience as part of an awareness campaign being run jointly between her own shapewear brand SKIMS, and the Bail Project which highlights the problems with Americas pretrial system.

When Kim was pregnant with her second child, son Saint, she developed the condition again

After she gave birth to Saint, she needed numerous surgical procedures to repair the damage left behind from two complicated pregnancies.

Kim had previously frozen two viable embryos and was keen to use them to carry another two babies into the world, but her doctors were not prepared to risk her experiencing the same condition again and subsequently risking her life.

Not only that, they said that doing so would result in them being open to malpractice. They point blank refused to allow her to have the IVF procedure to implant these two embryos.

So Kim and her husband Kanye West turned to surrogacy for their next two children, daughter Chicago and son Psalm

Kim says, “I grew up with so many siblings. I just loved being in a big environment… It was all worth it”.

Although her husband is reported as saying that Kim is “definitely done” having children, there have been recent reports that they are planning another child through surrogacy.

We can’t thank them enough for sharing their journey to parenthood publicly and the reasons behind their choices too. With more celebrities now opening up about their fertility experiences, its helping to break the silence on fertility around the world.
